Control & Automation Engineering Laboratory

In this laboratory, students carry out hands-on activities related to process control engineering and automation systems. These activities are linked to to the Bachelor’s in Industrial Engineering, the Bachelor’s in Biomedical Engineering, and the Master’s in Industrial Engineering, as well as activities related to integrated course projects and end-of-degree projects.

The activities carried out in this lab include:

  • The setup and programming of Programmable Logic Controllers (Siemens).
  • The study of industrial communication networks or fieldbuses: ASi bus, PROFINET, etc.
  • Introduction to supervision and control systems (SCADA systems).
  • The development of continuous control systems using the PID controller built into the PLC.
  • The assembly, connection and launch of electro-pneumatic systems integrating sensors, actuators and control systems.
  • Group presentations where the student has to demonstrate their ability to work in a team, communicate orally and in writing, and apply the content learned in a specific subject.

In subjects such as ‘Automation and Control’, ‘Control Engineering’, ‘Industrial Automation’ and ‘Industrial Computing’, these facilities are used to apply the theoretical concepts learned in class to real machinery and equipment that students will encounter in the industry.

Systems control stations with:

  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) from Siemens.
  • Touch screens (operator panel).
  • ASi communication bus.
  • System simulation trainers.
  • TIA Portal software with STEP 7 and WinCC Basic.

Electro-pneumatic stations with:

  • Valves.
  • Cylinders.
  • Sensors.
  • Festo FluidSIM software for the design and simulation of electro-pneumatic circuits.
