During clinical preparation, you will be trained in the latest trends and techniques in the field of dentistry. From your fourth academic year onwards, a large part of your training is carried out in our University Dental Clinics. You will treat real patients clocking nearly 1,000 practice hours.

A study plan designed based on the needs of the professional sector

The Bachelor’s in Dentistry at UEM is characterised by innovative teaching methodologies. These include the integration of foundational subjects, advanced simulation, complex scenarios in our simulation booths that mimic real life, as well as simulators with haptic technology and virtual reality. While our high-quality pre-clinical training is vital, clinical training in real-world settings is crucial to developing future professionals. Our University has two clinics where our students will perform 900 clinical hours on real patients. Both of our clinics are equipped with the latest diagnostic and treatment technologies. Our faculty is made up of qualified and prestigious clinicians and researchers with deep connections to the dental industry. Students are guided by professor as they receive individualised training and feedback to help them understand their progress.

In the first academic year, students will come into contact with basic sciences subjects that are fundamental to the training of all healthcare professionals. Our methodology is unique, with each subject completely integrated to the rest of the curriculum. Students will also be introduced to dental specialties through the Introduction to the Dental Clinic, where they will begin pre-clinical training.

In the second academic year, you will acquire knowledge in medical pathologies and study purely dental subjects, such as biomaterials, where you will learn the main materials and their use in the profession. In addition, during Diagnosis in Dentistry, you will learn the different radiological techniques and their application, and study Occlusion and Periodontics.

In the third academic year, you will acquire all the competencies of the different dental specialties, working in pre-clinical practices, advanced simulation environments and using virtual reality simulation and haptic technology. Learning in these settings will empower students to experience clinical training and real patient care.

In the fourth academic year, you will continue your theoretical training in the different areas of dentistry and will continue your clinical training by performing 300 practice hours on real patients. You will be supervised at all times by your professor to ensure the correct clinical care of patients.

In the fifth academic year, you will perform 600 clinical hours on real patients, carrying out all kinds of dental treatments. In this year, you will also carry out your final project, where you will apply and develop the training you have received to generate a personal project under supervision.

Basic competencies

  • B. The scientific foundations of dentistry. Acquisition and critical evaluation of information.
    • CE11. Students understand the basic biomedical sciences on which dentistry is based to ensure proper dental treatment.
    • CE12. Students understand and recognise the normal structure and function of the stomatognathic system, at the molecular, cellular, tissue and organic level, at different stages of life.
    • CE13. Students understand and recognise biomaterials sciences that are essential for dental practice as well as the immediate management of possible allergies to them.
    • CE14. Students know the general processes of disease, including infection, inflammation, immune system disturbances, degeneration, neoplasm, metabolic alterations, and genetic disorders.
    • CE15. Students are familiar with the general pathological characteristics of diseases and disorders that affect organic systems, specifically those that have oral repercussions.
    • CE16. Students understand the fundamentals of action, indications and efficacy of drugs and other therapeutic interventions, as well as their contraindications, interactions, systemic effects and impact on other organs, based on available scientific evidence.
    • CE17. Students can understand and recognise the principles of ergonomics and safety at work—including cross-infection control, radiological protection, and occupational and biological diseases.
    • CE18. Students are able to critically evaluate and understand how to use clinical and biomedical information in order to obtain, organise, interpret and communicate scientific and health information.

  • C. Clinical Skills: Diagnosis, prognosis and planning of dental treatment.
    • CE20. Students can obtain and develop a medical history that contains all the relevant information.
    • CE21. Students can perform a complete oral examination, including appropriate additional X-ray and examination tests, as well as obtaining appropriate clinical references.
    • CE22. Students are able to develop an initial diagnostic judgement and establish a reasoned diagnostic strategy, being competent in the recognition of situations that require urgent dental care.
    • CE23. Students can establish diagnosis, prognosis and adequate therapeutic planning in all clinical areas of dentistry. This includes being competent in the diagnosis, prognosis and elaboration of the dental treatment plan of a patient requiring special care, including medically compromised patients—such as diabetics, hypertensive patients, immunocompromised patients, anticoagulated patients, among others—and patients with disabilities.     • CE24. Students can recognise life-threatening situations and know how to perform basic life support maneuvers.
  • D. Clinical Skills: Dental therapeutics.
    • CE25. Students can apply the basic treatment of the most common oral pathology in patients of all ages. Therapeutic procedures should be based on the concept of minimal invasion and a comprehensive and integrated approach to oral treatment.
    • CE26. Students know how to plan and perform multidisciplinary, sequential and integrated dental treatments of limited complexity on patients of all ages and conditions, including patients who require special care.
    • CE27. Students can plan and propose the appropriate preventive measures for each clinical situation.
    • CE28. Students gain clinical experience under proper supervision.
  • E. Public healthcare and healthcare systems.
    • CE29. Students can recognise the determinants of oral health in the population, both genetic and lifestyle dependent such as demographic, environmental, social, economic, psychological and cultural factors.
    • CE30. Students recognise the role of the dentist in the prevention and protection of actions against oral diseases, as well as in the maintenance and promotion of health, both at the individual and community level.
    • CE31. Students understand the National Health System, as well as the basic aspects of health legislation, clinical management and the proper use of health resources, acknowledging the importance of this role.

External internship regulations.

Internships are a key component of your training. Acquiring experience after what you have learnt in your degree is the best way to enter the employment market. There are two types of internships: curricular—which are included in your study plan—and extracurricular—which you can do on a voluntary basis.

In order to complete curricular internships in companies, you will need to have 50% of the credits approved and to register the subject before starting your internship. These internships are monitored by the company and the internship coordinator, and interim and final reports are prepared for evaluation.

If you want to take your work experience to the next level before finishing your university education, you can pursue an extracurricular internship. You can do them in any academic year, but keep in mind that internships are a formative complement to your studies; therefore, the more knowledge you have acquired throughout your studies, the more you will benefit from the internship experience.

Career opportunities. Bachelor’s in Dentistry.

After pursuing a degree in dentistry, it’s time to enter the working world. A regulated profession The dentistry profession is regulated and governed by legislation in accordance with Article 12.9 of Royal Decree 1393/2007 which establishes the requirements for official university teachings and determines that dentists must possess the corresponding official degree obtained in accordance with the conditions laid down by the Government in the Council of Ministers Agreement of 8 February 2008, published in the Official State Gazette. The official degree of dentistry gives access to a single profile, a dentist, who can subsequently channel their professional life towards teaching, research, management, public or private healthcare, either as a self-employed or employed professional.

  • Free exercise of the profession, that is, being a self-employed dentist, setting up your own dental clinic, or working alongside other autonomous workers.
  • Primary and dependent hospital care providing dental services of the Regional Health System, private clinics and hospitals, health insurance companies, among others.

Credit recognition and transfers

If you want to access by transfer and opt for the limited places available through this access route, you must request validations and pass the admission process. The deadline to submit your transfer request for Dentistry Degree in Madrid is:

  • For external transfers, submit your application from January 15 to March 15, 2022. The resolution will be published from April 1, 2022.
  • For transfers from The Health Science Foundation Year programme at Universidad Europea de Madrid, submit your application from April 25 to May 25, 2022.

Dental students should be oriented to the field of healthcare sciences. It is important that you understand the importance of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases and their impact on overall health. You must be highly aware of ethical values, and maintain a high level of responsibility as well as the ability to communicate with patients and collaborate with other healthcare professionals.

It is important that you have a basic knowledge of chemistry and biology, manual skills, visual acuity and psychomotor coordination to enable you to learn the techniques needed to offer patients high-quality dental care. You must also have a predisposition to personal interactions in order to communicate effectively with patients and other professionals.

It is important that you have a critical mindset that allows you to analyse your own work and the reasons for error and, on the other hand, the commercial value of new techniques and devices in such a way as to differentiate between those that are useful and superfluous.

Entrance exams:

  • High school diploma and university entrance exam.
  • Vocational Training, Advanced Vocational Training or FP2. Academic certificates may be requested as proof.
  • If over the age of 25 and 45 years old, proof of passing the entrance exams.
  • University studies initiated or completed with the corresponding accreditation.
