He was president of Universidad Europea from 2000 to 2017 and, starting in 2005, he was CEO of Laureate International Universities Europe where he was responsible for eight countries. He was also a member of the Laureate World International Executive Committee from 2007 to 2017.
Miguel Carmelo underscored today, “how gratifying it is to feel that I’m here for the same reasons as when I first arrived almost two decades ago; I firmly believe in the importance of education both in people’s lives and for the progress of society, and I also believe in the fundamental role that our University can play in this regard. Our international relevance depends on how we teach our students.”
Miguel Carmelo holds a bachelor's degree in Economics and Business Studies from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a PhD from the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid. He is currently CEO of Universidad Europea and president of the Foundation. Since January 2015, he has been the president of the American Business Council, an association that represents the interests of US-based multinational firms in Spain. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Círculo de Empresarios and member of the Board of Trustees of Save the Children Spain.
He began his career at Unilever España, where he held various management positions: in 1990 as Vice President of Marketing, in 1993 as President of a European Department based in London responsible for 17 countries, and finally in 1997 he was appointed president and general manager of Lever España.
