What is the Model United Nations?

Model United Nations, also known as ‘MUN’, is a student-led educational project. It is carried out through debate and negotiation techniques where students represent countries within the UN system.

Definition of Model United Nations

MUN or Model United Nations recreates the sessions and proceedings of the General Assembly and other UN bodies. These sessions are designed to give students an understanding and practice of international diplomacy.

In the MUN event, each participant plays the role of a delegate from a UN member country, working as a team to find solutions to problems. This is how each individual acquires peaceful resolution methods, values and principles.

MUN Structure

The structure of the Model UN is similar in each country. The following are the common points.

• The organisation opens a registration phase and each delegation wishing to participate must submit a form by the deadline set by the organisation.
• The organisation draws lots and assigns each delegation the country it will represent at the MUN.
• Once the country has been assigned, the organisation provides material, manuals and regulations and each delegation prepares its position for each debate.
• Finally, the delegations travel to the venue and participate in the development of the Model for approximately 3 days. At this point the delegations draft solutions elaborated according to UN protocol to be read out on the last day of the event.
