Universidad Europea brings sport closer to cancer patients in the city of Parla

07 mar 2024

The "VENCE CON FORUS" programme, the result of the agreement reached between the European University Foundation, the Forus Sport and Health Foundation and the Parla City Council, kicks off. Through this initiative, cancer patients in the city can now practice physical exercise, adapted to their needs, developed by specialists from Universidad Europea. The benefits are clear. It has been scientifically proven that the practice of sport achieves improvements in physical condition, body composition and aspects of the disease such as fatigue

The VEnCE (Live, Train, Cancer, Confront) programme, which has more than 10 years of experience, allows, through interdisciplinary work, to provide patients with accessible and useful tools so that they can continue to do them both during their illness and once they have overcome it. The aim is for them to achieve the most comprehensive recovery possible.

Sergio Calvo, director of the European University Foundation, considers that through the VEnCE programme "we contribute our small, or not so small, grain of sand to social progress, our best tool to promote a transformation of society". He also stresses that "by generating links such as the one achieved with the Forus Sport and Health Foundation and the City Council of Parla, we can help citizens who really need it through a scientifically backed programme carried out by professionals from Universidad Europea".

"There is evidence that physical exercise is positively associated with a reduced risk of certain types of cancer. We know that being physically active is essential before, during and after cancer because it improves quality of life during the treatment itself, even increasing survival, and can facilitate the recovery process. But even knowing the aforementioned benefits, there are many patients who do not have many options for physical exercise supervised by truly qualified professionals, in a safe environment and under the guarantee of an interdisciplinary team that is an expert in the area. For this reason, from this City Council, more specifically from the Department of Sports, we did not think about it for a minute when the possibility arose to respond to this demand of the residents of our city", says the Mayor of Parla, Ramón Jurado, who in this sense values "the effort of both the Sports Department and the Forus Sport and Health Foundation and, of course, the European University, so that the VEnCE programme can see the light in our city. Because practising sport is health".

Ana Ruiz Arjona, director of Fundación Forus Deporte y Salud states that "the Forus Foundation promotes healthy lifestyle habits through sport for those who need it most. Thanks to the agreement with the European University Foundation and the support of the City Council of Parla, under the programme Vence con Forus, we offer our facilities to bring physical exercise to cancer patients in Parla to improve their quality of life at any time of the disease".

Under the umbrella of the European University Foundation, the interdisciplinary research group VEnCE, led by Itziar Pagola and made up of physical educators and physiotherapists, researches and directs healthcare projects in the area of physical exercise and cancer. The group not only trains patients in the area of physical exercise and cancer and improves their quality of life, but also researches and disseminates information in this area, contributing to the development of society and positively influencing the improvement of people's lives, the generation of knowledge and the promotion of learning.
