The School of Architecture, Engineering, Science and Computing - STEAM uses a Project-Based Learning (PBL) methodology that is further strengthened through continuous evaluation. Integrative Projects (IPs) make it possible to move beyond traditional learning silos.
The Project Based School (PBS) office was created to give support to the teaching staff at the UE STEAM School in the development of project-based learning, as well as to implement the academic model.
In the 2012-2013 academic year, the UE STEAM School embarked on a path of educational innovation by becoming a Project-Based Learning School that adopts a common methodology in order to develop students’ knowledge and skills to help them become outstanding professionals who respond to the real needs of employers, both in education and society. From this perspective, we believe that our students learn best when they apply their knowledge on a real project, as they will do in their professional life.
In this learning model, our students work on projects from their first year, developing communication, collaboration, problem-solving and critical analysis skills and, in some cases, with the collaboration of companies or institutions.
The PBS office in its role as a Project-Based Learning Observatory, also one of the pillars of the academic model, is committed to leading the true development of the learning model, providing teachers and students with the necessary resources to ensure the quality of learning.
Its main tasks include supporting teachers in their PBL projects, in-house training, monitoring and carrying out research on the PBL model at the School, as well as training activities and dissemination of the methodology to reinforce the academic model:
The office is composed of members from the School itself and focussed on the different knowledge areas of the STEAM School:
This is an event to acknowledge the integration projects, which puts the academic world in contact with leading companies in each sector carried out during the academic year.
All the projects students carry out during the academic year are eligible to participate, with a prize for each category and an overall prize. A specialized jury of professionals and companies collaborating with the UE STEAM School evaluates.
The event has been held annually, at the end of September, for the last ten years.
This is a forum of best practices where the UE STEAM School faculty shares the most outstanding dynamics of the PBL methodology. It is a repository of examples, shared by teachers, which helps other colleagues to learn, reinforce and implement the PBL methodology in their subjects.
The event has been organized annually, at the end of July, for the last 5 years.
This is a forum of best practices where the faculty at the UE STEAM School share experiences related to the PBL methodology with other teachers from leading European universities in this methodology.
The event has been organized annually, at the end of November, for the last 3 years.
This is a temporary exhibition of PBL projects in the hall and common areas of the School to give visibility to the PBL results in the different knowledge areas of the School.
The PBS office is responsible for organizing and conducting various training courses to reinforce the academic model and the project-based learning methodology.
Each year, the School of Architecture, Engineering, Science and Computing - STEAM recognises the best projects carried out by students during the academic year. In each degree programme, students complete at least one integrative project following the PBL philosophy that governs our academic model.
An internal panel selects the finalists from each field, who will go on to compete for the top prize. A jury composed of more than 30 members belonging to major companies and institutions from all sectors selects the best projects in each field, which receive their awards during the Project-Based School (PBS) Awards Session.
The following list of companies includes those which have participated in the PBS Awards selection committee, those which have collaborated with students as a part of PBS projects, and those which have collaborated with students through internships.

Aerogel Combustion Chamber
2019 PBS Award Winner
The design of an aircraft requires taking into account an infinite number of variables and limiting aspects that can affect the performance of the vehicle. One of the main ones is weight. The heavier the components used, the more energy will be needed to operate the aircraft and, therefore, the less efficient it will be: it will consume greater amounts of fuel, will have higher costs and will expel more polluting gases.
There are other factors that are not so obvious but can also have a major impact on both the efficiency and the cost of aircraft operations. Improving these parameters not only improves performance but also has an impact on atmospheric emissions, reducing them by requiring less fuel. The objective of our project, Aerogel C.C. ("Aerogel Combustion Chamber"), is to obtain improvements in the efficiency of a jet aircraft by two means: the reduction of thermal losses in the combustion chamber of the engine and a further reduction in weight.

Phobos
2019 PBS Award Winner
Phobos is a first-person horror game belonging to the survival horror genre. It consists of a semi-open world where the player must complete a series of missions that will require him to put into practice his puzzle-solving skills while he explores the vicinity of the ship in search of clues to achieve his objective, escape.
The title takes place on an exploration ship located near Earth orbit, the U.S.S. Aphelion. The ship is characterized by a dark and gloomy atmosphere, where the lack of light prevents you from seeing clearly what is on the other side of the room and the noise of pipes, doors and footsteps echoes in the horizon.
The main mechanic of Phobos is the dimensional passage. It consists of the passage between the real dimension in which the events of the game are developed in a general way to a second dimension which we call ethereal.

IGNIS
2019 PBS Award Winner
Our company's goal is to create a system capable of maintaining a stable temperature inside our customers' homes. But how is it going to help elderly people to keep the temperature of their home always stable? The answer is simple, an article in El País says that "cold causes more deaths in temperate regions where houses are not conditioned". It also explains that weaker people are at greater risk of infection by viruses because the cold favors the spread of this. Furthermore, in an article by Fernando Rodriguez Artalejo, Professor of Public Health at the Autonomous University of Madrid, adds "Cold can also decompensate chronic pathologies, typically respiratory failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart failure". For these reasons, our company believes that in order for the elderly to maintain their autonomy for a longer period of time, it is necessary for them to have a home that is adequately acclimatized.

Syncrotron Project
2018 PBS Award Winner
This project arises from the creation of a device with an electromagnetic component such as a cannon and the desire to overcome a previous project presented in the subject of Physics 1 (Visible Light Spectrograph). The proposed project is to control with some subtlety these electromagnetic elements.
It is an educational model representing a particle accelerator, where we propel a spherical projectile through a circular duct by means of electromagnetic coils. These are powered through a hybrid rectifier and the control is done through an Arduino Nano model.
The synchrotron has 4 coils of 3mH powered at 5 amps RMS, through a hybrid rectifier, which drive a spherical projectile of 10mm in diameter, which is located through visible light photocells made with white LEDs and LDR sensors, measuring the velocity at each point. The hybrid rectifier is composed of two diodes and two power thyristors that are activated through the Arduino board by means of optotriacs to protect the board from the high voltage. The result is that the projectile after a manual start pulse maintains a velocity of 0.942 m/s through the coils.

Management of Training at Work Centres
2018 PBS Award Winner
Creation of a desktop application for the Management of Workplace Training (FCT) by the Professional Center of the European University of Madrid (UEM).
This is a real need that exists in the Professional Center of the UEM. The roles involved initially are: Management of the Professional Center and Internship Tutors of the different CFGS taught at the UEM.
The work has been approached following the same life cycle of any similar project, as an IT consultant would do. The client has been the Director of the Professional Center, Ana Manzanero, with whom the initial requirements have been taken and who has been present during all phases of the project. The project management has been assumed by Pedro Camacho, teacher of the students in the subjects of Programming and Databases, which are the two modules on which the Integrated Project has been carried out. The students have been rotating in different groups, to train their teamwork skills.
They have worked with Scrum methodology, establishing different Sprint reviews throughout the three trimesters of the course.
The selected team presented the best project, although all the groups managed to have good projects. In addition to the technical criteria (assessed by the teacher), usability and accessibility criteria (assessed by the client) were taken into account.
Once the application has been implemented and as future lines, we will try to involve the Territorial Area Management (DAT) and obtain the mobile version of the application (APP).

This corridor of the current road is, in general, favorable for the development of the project given that the terrain is generally flat. In addition, it has been a priority for the route to run as much as possible on the existing platform.
This highway has 14 structures, as follows: 7 overpasses; 3 viaducts, 2 in situ cross drainage works, 1 underpass and finally 1 retaining wall with noise screen.
This working group has selected the overpass located at kilometer point PK 10+070 of the route. This is an overpass with 3 spans of lengths 15 + 30 + 15, for a total length of 60.0 m. The structure crosses over the highway, the latter running in fill. As a consequence, the height of the access fillings is higher than usual, about 11.0 m, to leave the necessary clearance.
Taller Madrid Turismo (International Circular Design Workshop)
2018 PBS Award Winner
An international workshop organized by professors from the Department of Design, Art and Digital Content at the European University in collaboration with professors of Multimedia Design from the AP Degree in Multimedia Design and Communication at CphBusiness in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The workshop dealt with a topic that could interest students and teachers from both institutions and experiment with alternative methods of cross-cultural collaborative work. The chosen topic was Madrid and its touristic interest, analyzing the city from the perspective of young people (students) and from three points of view: Culture, Leisure and the meeting points that could be noticed between the two previous aspects.
The deliverable of the workshop consisted of an urban poster campaign for the public road, to be placed in areas with points of interest, as well as pocket folding guides that would allow to recognize and interpret the areas and points of interest, all adapted to a more sustainable design approach taking advantage of appropriate materials and processes.
The students were to work inside and outside the classroom, do all the necessary field work and, at the end, publicly present their campaign, including the preparation of final artwork for all the pieces. In addition, the experience was to culminate with an exhibition that they themselves designed, produced in the FabLab and mounted in the school hall.
The experience will be repeated in the first quarter of the 18/19 academic year with other groups from the two schools and in a format to be determined. Following this meeting we also organized several meetings between students and teachers in the center of Madrid to see exhibitions, visit the Matadero Madrid and to make a little social life to get to know each other better.
Lozoyuela 2018
2018 PBS Award Winner
The project seeks to break with the traditional way of teaching classes, taking advantage of the opportunity given by the city council of Lozoyuela, creating an experience for students to work on a real project, with all that this implies, both the realization in situ of the various proposals, as well as the resolution of the various problems that arise throughout the assembly process.
This experience shows how the realization of projects works in the real world, from the moment in which the projects are presented to the city council and the council decides which ones can go ahead, to the research and search for materials to build the works and the different modifications that have to be made.
Starting from the research work, the students develop this in different phases, the first one being the research on the site where the different works are going to be developed, then an investigation on the functioning of the different materials that have been proposed to be used in the projects, and then the approach on how to carry out the assembly of the same.
All this teaches students different values such as responsibility, since they have to meet deadlines and also the work of each one has implications on the work of others as there are many tasks that are only possible to perform through teamwork, which is another of the values quite encouraged, on the one hand by what has already been mentioned, on the other hand, by solving problems, which are exposed to the rest of the group to find different solutions.
The different problems that arise throughout the project teach the students to find solutions in a short period of time, which have to be realistic and easy to solve, since the established dates do not vary and they are solutions that really have to be applicable at the moment and with the resources that the students have at hand.
Finally, the fact that the students work on such different projects, and without restrictions on the use of materials or dimensions, creates the opportunity for them to generate an interdisciplinary space, in which they mix audiovisual, sculptural and pictorial ideas, forcing them to investigate the use of the different materials they have proposed to use in order to fulfill the idea of the project.
Flykenstein
2018 PBS Award Winner
This project consists of the development and manufacture of a UAV. The development of this UAV has been carried out throughout the course, as a final project of different subjects, while its manufacture and flight has been carried out once the classes were finished.
Throughout the course, we were in different working groups, developing different unmanned aircraft. In addition, the groups had members that varied according to the subject, so there were never groups with all members fixed for any of the subjects that were part of the integrative project. In addition, for the development of the UAV, different structural and aerodynamic analyses and graphic designs were carried out throughout the course, all of them using analysis and design software, such as Ansys-Fluent, XFLR5, Nastran-Patran and Catia, as well as 3dsmax, a 3D modeling software used for preliminary designs of the UAV.
Finally, the last subject included in the integrative project was Graphic Design. In it, the 3D design of the UAV was modeled in Catia and the wing was structurally analyzed in Nastran-Patran. In addition, as a voluntary activity, all the groups participating in that subject were offered the possibility of manufacturing our designs. Since no other student was interested in building the UAV, the professor allowed us to merge both projects (belonging to different groups), because we did not have enough time to manufacture the airplanes separately and individually; all this in order to submit to the PBS competition.

Keniable
2017 PBS Award Winner
Keniable is a real commission for the construction of an orphanage in Molo (Kenya).
Students and professors of the Degree in Fundamentals of Architecture have developed a prototype building, which although built in Spain, is replicable in other parts of the world without being alien to the environment, due to the technology and materials used. It applies solutions that are not alien to the habitat in a large number of societies. It does not transfer polluting elements, nor does it require
deactivation in recycling, and its carbon footprint is close to zero.
It is carried out with simple tools, known materials and construction systems, which do not require specialized working knowledge. An open prototype, which starts in Molo and Madrid, but can be exported anywhere in the world.
It is an instruction manual. It explains how to build, with local materials, a prototype building, expandable and versatile.
Keniable is a professional assignment, for international cooperation, from university classrooms. It has been an opportunity for the integration of knowledge and collaboration of multiple agents: architects, engineers, logisticians, industrialists, sponsors, marketing, NGOs, etc...
And it has been, above all, a collective experience of intense work and human exchange throughout an academic year.
The result of the extensive technical project is communicated in an A5 publication, which allows anyone to tackle the assembly of a device, with the adaptations required by the function and place.
Following this manual, we expect a group of volunteers to help build the Orphanage in Molo during the coming months of 2017.
The main objective of the Keniable project was the definition of an Implementation Project and the subsequent elaboration of an Instruction Manual, which would make possible the construction in situ of a replicable, scalable and versatile orphanage prototype.

La Manche: Site-Specific Project for MULAFEST
2017 PBS Award Winner
The project seeks to draw our attention to the enormous amount of waste we generate on a global scale, and more specifically, to the fact that a large part of it is concentrated in areas far enough away from inhabited environments so that no one is interested in its final destination or feels responsible for its presence.
With a surface of 150 m2, on which is represented a Planisphere, with the five continents silhouetted in carpet of different colors and where the Pacific Ocean occupies the central place of the installation. In the middle of it is placed symbolically, "La Mancha", a huge mountain of bottles and semitransparent and colored plastic waste, mixed and entangled with fishing nets at sea and other recyclable items, which are intended to raise awareness of this great environmental threat to the viewer.
On each continent there is a group of benches of different colors and heights, which codify and indicate the quantities of plastic waste, expressed in millions of tons, that are generated on each continent.
Finally, from inside "La Mancha", and through the transparent plastics, beams of light emerge that seem to come from the depths of the waters, while the rhythmic sound of the ocean is heard, to generate an immersive experience for the viewer.
Installation Date: June 28, 2017.
Opening to the Public: June 30 to July 2, 2017.

The project consisted of a second live broadcast for a pilot test of an accessible player of the audiovisual content that was being produced and broadcast by the team of the CNSE Foundation (State Confederation of Deaf People) through YouTube of the congress organized by the COIT (Official College of Telecommunications Engineers) in the auditorium of CEAPAT (State Reference Center for Personal Autonomy and Technical Aids).
To capture the image and audio of the CNSE Foundation realization system, we used an HDMI audiovisual capture device connected to a laptop in charge of encoding the data using the RTMP real-time streaming protocol to a cloud transcoding service that subsequently sent the transcoded video in MPEG DASH adaptive streaming format to a Google cloud storage space. From this space the player, called Player4All-Live, whose live operation is the one we are trying to validate, accessed the live content via HTTP and played it inserted in iframe mode in a specific web page designed and programmed by us specifically for the test.
