New recognition for the research work of Universidad Europea at a congress that brought together nearly half a thousand people. The Institution, which teaches the Master's Degree in Psychological Intervention in Crisis Situations, Catastrophes and Emergencies, was one of the main protagonists of the First Edition of the National Congress of Emergency Psychology, winning the two prizes awarded at this conference: best scientific communication and best scientific poster.

Those attending the congress have witnessed different real cases encountered by professionals in the field of emergency psychology, delved into the right to care in critical situations and learned about the main challenges faced by this fundamental branch of psychology that has continued to grow in recent decades, among other topics addressed by the 45 experts who participated in this conference. During the congress, students, alumni and professors of the Master's Degree in Psychological Intervention in Crisis Situations, Disasters and Emergencies shared their knowledge in this area by participating in a symposium, three oral communications and three scientific posters.

The congress organised by the Colexio Oficial de Psicoloxía de Galicia recognised the efforts of Sara Laguna, alumni of the Master's Degree in General Health Psychology; the director of the Master's Degree in Psychological Intervention in Crisis Situations, Catastrophes and Emergencies, Jesús Linares; the students of the latter Master's Degree, Francesca Olivieri and Cristina Moltó; and Sandra Aroche, coordinator and psychologist of Psychology without Borders. Thanks to their project on psychological intervention for UNRWA staff, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, they have won the prize for the best scientific communication. The project, as Jesús Linares recalls, ‘would not have been possible without the collaboration of Psicología sin Fronteras, UNRWA and TEA Ediciones-’.

Suicide is the main cause of death among young people aged between 16 and 29. Nuria Andrés, student of the Master's Degree in Psychological Intervention in Crisis Situations, Catastrophes and Emergencies; José Antonio Luengo Latorre, dean-president of the Official College of Psychology of Madrid; and Jesús Linares have created a programme of psychological intervention in educational centres after completed suicide. This project, presented as a scientific poster, was also recognised as the best scientific poster at the event.

Jesús Linares, who participated in the two award-winning projects, explained the success of this research: ‘In the Master's Degree in Psychological Intervention in Crisis Situations, Disasters and Emergencies we teach more than 200 subjects that bring together the latest scientific and technical advances in the field of emergency psychology. And not only that, we are the only official master's degree in this field and we have professionals who apply their knowledge on a day-to-day basis, who bring students closer to the professional reality not only through professional internships, but also with simulated internships, which allow them to approach the professional world in safe environments’. He also stressed that ‘training in emergency psychology is essential for any psychology professional because this area of knowledge is focused on crises, but not only those that occur in large-scale events (pandemics, major fires, armed conflicts, volcanic eruptions), but also the critical moments that can occur in everyday life (micro-emergencies): violence, suicide, grief, accidents...’.

The participation of the Psychology area of Universidad Europea in this event shows the Institution's concern for applied research, which allows the circle of knowledge transfer to be closed, promoting projects that have a direct impact on society.
