The Academic Council of Universidad Europea presented an Honorary PhD to the Spanish scientist, Juan Ignacio Cirac, during the opening ceremony of the 2016/2017 academic year, held on September 22 at the Villaviciosa de Odón Campus. The award, which followed a request from the School of Architecture, Engineering and Design, recognizes the career and contribution from Juan Ignacio Cirac to the field of Quantum Information.
Juan Ignacio Cirac, Director of the Theory Division at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Munich. The Spanish physicist is known for such ideas as the creation of a quantum computer for material design, drugs manufacture and information encoding. Juan Ignacio Cirac highlighted the need for progress in the field of science, specifically the field of quantum physics, because “now is the time we can turn the tables and think about how we can fully harness quantum physics”.
Juan Ignacio Cirac was presented with his Honorary PhD at an event presided over by Isabel Fernández, Rector of Universidad Europea. The event was also attended by Lluís Torner, Director of the Photonic Science Institute (ICFO), who gave the citation address, José Manuel Torralba, Director-General for Universities and Research of the Regional Government of Madrid, and Elena de la Fuente, General Secretary of Universidad Europea.
