The Nursing Department works with Alcer on the “Proyecto Crece” children’s camp in Gran Canaria

09 aug 2016

The National Federation of Associations for the Fight Against Kidney Disease (Alcer), which has been working with the Universidad Europea Nursing Department since 2013, has once again organized a children’s camp called Proyecto Crece (Project Grow), from June 23-30, 2016 on the island of Gran Canaria. The activity received the "Patient empowerment and lifestyle” award granted by Diaverum International.

Four third year Nursing degree students were chosen to share these days at camp with the children. Taking part in this activity is an added value to their academic training as it encourages social responsibility and offers experience-based learning through contact with kidney patients in non-healthcare environments. Taking part in Alcer’s activities is also a chance for the students to get a closer look at the daily life of Chronic Kidney Disease patients and promotes a more “human and demedicalized” vision of the condition.

Students Rocio del Castillo, Beatriz Martín, Itziar Carmona and Inés Serrano lived alongside the children and worked as part of a multidisciplinary team to teach children how to live with chronic kidney disease; as well as to become aware and take responsibility for their food and the treatment they must follow.
