On June 22, Universidad Europea held its Biochemistry seminars, which were part of the course on Biochemistry of the Medicine Degree Program. The seminars on how this discipline affects the day-to-day running of a Hospital were the finishing touch to the efforts of freshman Medicine students over the last trimester.
They aimed to integrate the core requirements of the first years of Medicine with the real clinical practice waiting for students when they become healthcare professionals, and allow students to present their work on various case reports in the Hall in Building A.
The sessions ended with a keynote speech on the impact and need for Biochemistry in hospitals, given by Dr Amaya Belanger Quintana, from the Reference Unit for Congenital Metabolic Diseases at the Hospital Ramón y Cajal and Jesús Ignacio Meco Rodríguez, chairman of the Association of Rare Diseases (ACMEIM). Both stressed the work and perspective of the medical professional who faces rare diseases and the need for information of parents affected by one of these diseases.
All the participants, students, speakers and professors highlighted the essential role of biochemistry today for understanding and treating genetic-metabolic diseases, contributing to improving the health patients.
