José Manuel Maza, holder of a superior level diploma in Penal Law from the Universidad Europea de Madrid and professor of the Certificate Course in Penal and Business Law since 2005, was sworn in to his new responsibilities as Attorney General in the Palace of La Zarzuela on the morning of November 28.
Maza’s swearing-in was presided by His Majesty King Felipe VI, with the Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy Brey; the President of the Supreme Court and the General Council of the Judiciary, Carlos Lesmes Serrano; the Justice Minister, Rafael Catalá Polo, as the Senior Notary of the State, and the Director General of Registers and Notaries, Francisco Javier Gómez Gálligo.
Maza replaces Consuelo Madrigal, who took the post in early 2015 after the resignation of Eduardo Torres-Dulce. The new Attorney General graduated in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid and is a Full Professor of Medieval History. During his career as a lawyer, he was attorney to Renfe and a non-practicing prosecutor from 1978.
The Universidad Europea professor has been a magistrate in the Penal Court of the Supreme Court since 2002 and presides the first section of the Provincial Courts of Madrid. Maza will occupy the position of Attorney General for a four-year term. His main objectives will include combating corruption, applying the present Penal Code, and fostering the new penal trial system introduced by the Executive branch.
