Elena Gazapo, New Rector of Universidad Europea de Madrid

Elena Gazapo underscored “the privilege entailed by assuming this new responsibility supporting this University’s commitment to offering the best to each and every student.”

Elena Gazapo was the dean of the School of Biomedical and Health Sciences at Universidad Europea de Madrid up until now, where she was responsible for the bachelor's degree programs in the Health area (Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Dentistry, Psychology, Nutrition, and Optics-Optometry), as well as all the graduate and doctoral programs. She is replacing Juan Morote Sarrión as rector.

In reference to Elena, Miguel Carmelo highlighted “the magnificent work she has done as dean of the School of Biomedical and Health Sciences of Universidad Europea de Madrid and the depth of her understanding of our University, so we are sure that her leadership and professionalism will be invaluable in this new chapter.”

Elena holds a bachelor's degree in Medicine and Surgery from Universidad Complutense de Madrid, where she received her PhD in Immunology in 1990. She also holds a master's degree in HIV Infections (Universitat de Barcelona) and received university training in Statistical Methods in Health Science (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona).

In the first 10 years of her career she worked as a Research Physician for the Immunology Service of Hospital Clínico Universitario San Carlos in Madrid and in the Infectious Disease and Microbiology Unit of Instituto de Salud Carlos III in Madrid, publishing a number of scientific articles in national and international journals, as well as giving numerous talks at conferences.

She received a grant from the Subdirectorate General of Research and Training of the regional Ministry of Health of  the Autonomous Community of Madrid, where she worked providing Immunology consulting.

She continued her career in the pharmaceutical industry, where she held different high-ranking positions in the Medical Department of Abbot Laboratories and Roche Pharma Spain and was Medical Director of Astellas Pharma and Nycomed Pharma, with the areas under her responsibility including Medical Training, Clinical Research, Quality, Pharmacovigilance, and the Medical Marketing department.
