On June 15, José Ramón Cuspiera, current coach of Club Baloncesto Fuenlabrada, which plays in the Liga ABC basketball league, offered a talk to students from the School of Sports and Exercise Sciences (CAFYD).
The main hall of the Universidad Europea sports facilities at Villaviciosa de Odón was the venue chosen to share ideas and debate on elite sport, basketball, education and the keys of the university in the sector. The talk focused on outdated myths and beliefs about top-level competitive basketball training and the importance of linking education and elite sports.
During the talk, Cuspiera stressed that “the distance there can be between education and elite sport makes it even more difficult to know how to train when working at that level”. This session gave Sports Science students the chance to share and gain experiences with elite competitive coaches such as Cuspiera, who help them better understand what aspects they must focus on when training athletes.
After speaking with the Sports Science students, the coach of the Madrid basketball team referred to the Universidad Europea by saying “I’ve seen the campus in person and I think having a facility like this is priceless for quality education. I wish I’d had an environment like this when I was young".
