The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport has announced the winner of the contest for drafting the Sorolla Museum extension project. The winning bidder was Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos, a firm co-founded by Fuensanta Nieto, professor of projects at the School of Architecture at Universidad Europea.
The extension project is valued at 211,000 Euros and the Sorolla Museum will be extended by 1,600 square meters using premises next to the museum. Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos will focus on the studio, courtyard and gardens of the museum in order to address the functional shortcomings found in the building to date. The extension will respect the structure of the home and will include a restoration studio, a larger temporary exhibition hall, a café, a store, space for receiving visitors and groups, an event room, improved access and other developments.
The Sorolla Museum, acquired by the Ministry of Culture in 2009, will count on the experienced architecture studio for the implementation of the project. Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos has received various awards such as the National Conservation Award and the Europea Museum of the Year 2012 Award for its work on the Madinat al Zahra Museum, the San Telmo Museum, the Zaragoza Conference Center and the Contemporary Art Center of Cordoba, among others.
