A team led by Doctor Vicente Clemente presents the results of the third medical study of the Alpinultras project

29 sep 2016

September 10 saw the tenth edition of Canfranc-Canfranc, one of the toughest ultra-trails in Spain and one of the three pillars of the Alpinultras project, which was attended by various Universidad Europea researchers to evaluate the performance of the runners. After completing the circuit, some runners voluntarily took part in the team's medical tests, led by Doctor Vicente Clemente.

These tests analyzed the psychophysiological response of the participants who took on a circuit with an 8,848 meter climb and 100 kilometer route, completed in 25-33 hours. “Unlike the previous Emona Ultratrail and Ultra Valls d’Aneu races held in July, the runners followed our recommendations and had good hydration levels both before and after the race”, highlighted Doctor Clemente.

Due to the characteristics of the circuit, with greater technical difficulty, the Universidad Europea team observed that the strength of the leg muscles was not greatly affected after walking a large part of the route. However, Doctor Clemente stressed that “the runners had an energy deficit during the race because of an incorrect nutritional strategy”. The team led by Doctor Vicente Clemente is also analyzing the urine samples collected at the Biotechnology laboratory to examine proteinuria during this type of ultra-resistance race.
