Universidad Europea helps to prepare paralympic athlete Gema Hassen-Bey and her latest challenge to summit Mount Kilimanjaro

17 oct 2016

The athlete Gema Hassen-Bey is currently in Extremadura testing all the equipment she needs for her next Diverscity challenge, in collaboration with the Universidad Europea: to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. At the base training camp, installed in Monfragüe park, Extremadura, she will also use her adaptation period to explore the local green routes designed for people with reduced mobility. Hassen-Bey’s goal is to get institutions, businesses and individuals to participate and collaborate; for now she already has a team of doctors, coaches, physical therapists and mechanics analyzing her performance.

This new preparation venue in Extremadura is due to the new challenge proposed by Hassen-Bey and completing the climb of the Bey Summit – Kilimanjaro Challenge sports and social project promoted by the association Bey proAction. The athlete will thus become the first woman in a wheelchair to camp for 15 days before reaching the summit of the highest mountain in Africa (5,985 meters).

Various institutions, businesses and associations are signing up to Hassen-Bey’s challenge. CaixaBank, the National Sports Council, the Spanish Olympic Committee, Iberia, iAltitude, Universidad Politécnica Carlos III, the Regional Government of Extremadura and Universidad Europea will accompany the athlete during her training and to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
