The CIBER consortium includes proposals developed by teaching staff from the Universidad Europea School of Biomedical Sciences

07 oct 2016

On September 22, the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, together with the Managing Board of the Carlos III Health Institute, approved two proposals involving Universidad Europea professors to be included in the new subject areas of new groups in the CIBER consortium.

The two projects selected in the Area of Cardiovascular Diseases were the CIBER group, with the collaboration of professor David Sanz, and the CNIC group, which includes professor José Rivera, both from the School of Biomedical Sciences. The proposal developed by Rivera, entitled Molecular bases of atherogenesis and vascular aging in translational models, studies the molecular mechanisms that cause physiological aging and related cardiovascular diseases.

According to professor Rivera, “we hope to be able to identify new biomarkers and molecular targets to use in early diagnosis and therapy for these cardiovascular diseases”. In addition to the main objectives, Rivera admitted that “we hope to discover new molecular and cell mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of one of the most devastating rare diseases known today.

Being included in the CIBER consortium is a recognition for the two groups led respectively by the Medical and Scientific Directors of the National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) with the participation of Sanz and Rivera. “In the short-medium term future we hope that this will impact participation in scientific projects and scientific production.  It is another contribution for the Universidad Europea to continue extending its coverage and presence at the highest level”, said Rivera.
