Edited on 12 Jan. 2023
¿Cómo ser asesor fiscal?

The dynamism of the labour market, the increase in competitiveness, and the growing complexity of the legal systems around the world requires a high level of knowledge and specialisation in business, tax and accounting management. For this reason, the figure of the tax and financial advisor has become a key element for growth, solvency and regulatory compliance in many companies.

In fact, tax and accounting consultancy is a sector with great future and high employability prospects. According to data published by the Asociacion Española de Consultores de Empresa, there are around 70,000 tax advisors in Spain – one for every 48 people. In the US there are around 82,000, or 1 for every 370 people, and in the UK the figure is 33,000, one for every 160 people. Taking a Degree in Economics will open the doors to the job market.

What does a tax advisor do?

Tax advisors are professionals who provide advice and help companies and individuals in matters related to tax and tax law. In addition to working in consulting firms, law firms, or in the Finance or Accounting departments of large organisations, they may also offer their services as freelancers.

In their day-to-day, a tax advisor usually performs different tasks, such as:

  • Advise companies and individuals on tax issues, showing them the most appropriate way to comply with their tax obligations and avoid sanctions for non-compliance or ignoring the laws.
  • Help companies plan their tax situation and optimise their tax burden so that they can achieve the maximum possible savings.
  • Review and/or prepare tax returns for companies and individuals.
  • Optimise the structure of business operations from a tax standpoint and help design employee reward plans taking into account their tax impact.
  • Represent companies and/or individuals before the tax authorities or when they submit to tax inspections, also taking care of all the procedures related to taxation and business accounting.
  • Participate in the preparation of business plans and strategic decision-making regarding tax issues that directly concern the organization.
  • Find solutions for possible tax or accounting problems that the companies or individuals they advise may have.
  • Provide advice on the acquisition, sale or mergers of companies taking into account the tax impact of such operations.
  • Stay up-to-date on changes in fiscal and tax legislation to adequately advise your clients and explain their impact on their business.
