STEAM Alliance for Female Talent

Universidad Europea de Valencia, in collaboration with other organisations, has joined the initiative “Niñas en Pie de Ciencia” (Girls in Science) led by the STEAM Alliance for Female Talent, backed by Spain’s Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, as well as various companies, with the aim of combating all forms of discrimination.

This initiative arose with the objective of ensuring that women have the same opportunities as men. To this end, the initiative seeks to promote action to attract young women to disciplines related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics, together with arts and humanities, i.e. the area of STEAM.

Through this agreement, the aim is for companies and organisations, both public and private, to share an interest in promoting STEAM careers among women in order to reduce the lack of women with a scientific background. All this falls under the UN’s Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. Of particular relevance is Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which focuses on inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning for all, as well as SDG 5, aimed at gender equality and empowering women.

Under the protocol of this alliance, measures are put forward to reduce the gender gap and promote education in STEAM. These measures underline the importance of training teachers in active learning methods, to make science and technology subjects attractive for students. Furthermore, the aim is to promote the creation of a new syllabus to strengthen and give visibility to the role of women in science and technology-related fields, as well as educational material that highlights women and their contributions in all areas of knowledge, especially in the area of STEAM, so they can serve as female role models that everyone can identify with.

With this agreement, the university joins efforts to close the gender gap and support girls’ access to technology-related fields, in line with its experiential learning approach, which promotes gender equality and high-quality education.
